MDF Mouldings: Choosing the Right Finish

MDF mouldings finish

From the minimalist appearance of a square-edge skirting board to the timeless elegance of a classic ogee moulding, there are plenty of options to consider when it comes to choosing MDF mouldings. Of course, the range of options isn’t limited to the shape of the mouldings; there’s also the finishes to consider. Knowing what finishes are available and the benefits of each will help you choose the right finish for a project. Let’s look at the various options for MDF mouldings in more detail.

The Different Finish Options for MDF Mouldings

At SAM, we specialise in fully finished MDF mouldings, which are supplied with high-quality and consistent finishes, ready for installation. Three options are available:

  • SAM Zero – These are provided with two coats of primer and an acrylic topcoat, reducing the painter’s preparation time. These are supplied in white RAL9003.
  • SAM Wrap (veneer) – These profiles are wrapped in real wood veneer, providing a high-quality and cost-effective alternative to solid timber. Veneer options include White Oak, Walnut, Ash, Cherry, Maple and Steamed Beech. Other finishes are available on request.

As well as our range of fully finished MDF mouldings, we also offer primed MDF Mouldings. These are provided ready for finishing and installation, just a light bit of sanding is all that’s needed before the topcoat is applied.

Choosing the Right Finish for your Project

Ultimately, choosing the right finish for MDF mouldings will depend on project requirements as well as personal preferences. Here, Mark Kirkpatrick, technical director at SAM, gives his recommendations, based on what your priorities might be:

  • Quick and easy installation – For simple and fast installation, choose fully finished MDF mouldings such as SAM Wrap or Sam Zero. These products are offered in a huge range of styles and finishes, so there’s likely to be something that meets your specific requirements.
  • A consistent, high-quality finish – Fully finished mouldings have a factory-applied finish, which provides an attractive and uniform finish throughout a home, or across an entire development.
  • Apply any topcoat – If you don’t want to commit to the fully finished options, consider our primed range. These can then be finished with the topcoat of choice.
